Hyundai has revealed intends to introduce a “world-first” engine technology it is calling Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD), that will start to make its distance to production cars who are only later this holiday season.
What is CVVD? It’s essentially a good version of variable valve timing, except rather than controlling just valve timing regarding the closing and opening schedules, CVVD regulates the use of the valve closing and opening and also the timing of when these sequences happen.
Hyundai says the science shows a 4 per-cent improvement in performance and 5 per-cent improvement in fuel efficiency. Emissions also are cut by an impressive 12 %. Explaining further, Hyundai said within a report:
“Should the vehicle is maintaining a regular speed and needs low engine output, CVVD opens the intake valve from the middle to separate of your compression stroke. This will assist to further improve fuel efficiency by lessening the resistance because of compression. However, when engine output is high, like as soon as the car is driving in a high-speed, the intake valve is closed at the beginning of the compression stroke to increase the amount of air employed for the explosion, enhancing torque to boost acceleration.”
This is usually nice thing about it either way eco car as well as car fans. And also the technology isn’t far. The group is intending to introduce the tech towards the market in Hyundai and Kia products soon. It has even unveiled the initial engine to feature CVVD, termed as a Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi. This is a turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine which produces 134kW and 265Nm.
Hyundai confirms this engine will probably be offered from the new Sonata Turbo that may to enter the world throughout the second half on this year. Other models, including Kia vehicles, will be given the powerplant not long after. Albert Biermann, president and head of research and development at Hyundai Motor Group, spoke from the technology, saying:
“The progression of the CVVD technologies are an illustration how Hyundai Motor Group is strengthening our powertrain technology. We shall continue our innovation efforts to make forth paradigm shifts and make sure sustainability of our business structure.”
